Whack-A-Mole Management

Okay, you all know what I’m talking about…

Leadership provides a vision and a plan.  Everyone is focused, armed with a game plan and knows their role.  Then BAM!  Another priority pops up.  Then BAM! Another priority pops up.  Before you know it your walking the halls trying the whack-every-“mole” that pops up, all the while trying as hard as you can to get back to the goal.

In my 20-year experience this has been the leading distraction for business growth.  Any leader worth their salt will always review new opportunities or shifts in business that arise and need attention.  However, what I’ve witnessed more and more are constant distractions from original strategy based on the day-to-day ebb and flow, rather than being grounded in the long-term growth needed to be transformational.  Hence strategy never really gets off the ground.  Growth plans hindered.   Cross-functional connectivity gets disjointed.  Finger pointing starts.

Folks, your business should not be a carnival game.   If you feel you’re caught in a whack-a-mole business model.  Step up and lead it back to a focus of :

What you do best.

What your customers need most.

What your employees need most.

How you can be transformational in your space.

What will it take.


Leaders, should influence appropriate flexibility while absolutely limiting distractions.  Otherwise the next mole that may get whacked… is you.
